Good Garbage (podcasts)
Tales and tours of the lives of Kathy and Fred in an urban neighborhood of Louisville, KY, including audio treasures, strange moments, and ponderings on esoteric religion. Please leave comments or ideas for us!

For me, the Lord's Prayer is a wonderful meditation, and the more ways I can experience it the more personal it becomes. Maybe it seems inappropriate to take it onto the sidewalks, so to speak, complete with panting from exertion and the noise of traffic, but to me it felt like a small awakening.

Just like body parts, some works of literature require “enhancing” to reach their full potential. In this case, I was pleased to render service to the opening chapter of an audio book I picked up at the library called The Nature of Monsters. See if you don’t agree that a few subtle effects help reveal the point and thrust of the writing.

Here’s a story of an initiation ritual told by our young friend Tom. It’s too bad the club wasn’t one he really wanted to be in, because as initiation rituals go, this one sounds like fun!

To shake things up a little, here's a very silly naughty bit from a gathering we went to, where all the blind folks had penned up their guide dogs out back. In her defense, Kathy was tired, and she is not responsible for anything she says or feels (ahem!) in that condition.

I (Fred, that is) am starting a new thing with this installment. I plan to post some readings of written passages that appeal to me, or spark my interest in some way or another. The idea is not to preach but to sow ideas around in a way that gives people food for thought, or for play, or imagination.

There is enough intellectual debate already on the Internet. There are a lot of scholars and would-be theologians poised to flex their well-developed arguing skills and back their opponents into tight corners, and to look good doing it, and it's all very tiring. I'm not anti-intellectual--in fact, I think our general anti-intellectual bias is a sad thing--and I think most situations could be made much better if people had the ability to think clearly. But many people are much too attached to their own words and would rather use them to "win" arguments than to bring light. Opinions don't change or improve the world; words and deeds inspired by love do.

For me, the goal, and the challenge, is to let the words work in imagination and in feelings rather than just as intellectual weights to lift. I don't need to memorize or "master" the content; giving it my time and clear attention is enough.

Please let me know if these readings move you in any particular direction, or if you have suggestions for future passages to read. Thanks!

Our good friend Doug told this tale from his days on board ship in the later years of the Vietnam war. Boys will be boys....

I'm not a big fan of using the pity card to get loot. That, and I have a demented sense of humor.

Wow. I've become one of those people who wander the streets talking to themselves out loud.

It had better pay off by making me say something interesting eventually.

Betcha thought we'd vanished, dincha? You oughta know we can't quit this crazy business. It's in our blood. Once you've had a tast of the Big Time yer hooked, and even when yer taking yer last breath you'll check to see if the mic is on and the levels are set right....

Here is some silliness in the tradition of The Dusty Show on WFMU.org.

Such a big delay between new podcasts--not sure why, except people just haven't been very funny or profound lately. And that definitely includes me most of all....

Thank heavens for Tina, coming to the rescue with this story about lying to children. It has drama, repentence, and even a moral for the ages. For comparison, listen to the Dec. 2007 piece called Terrible Babysitters!
